What Can You Do On the Web?

The World Wide Web is...

kind of like a radio and a backyard fence and a classroom and a zoo and a shopping mall, and so much more...

The Web can be a practical place.
You can look up a phone number.  The Web is a handy time- keeper. It can help you figure out the metric system. You can check ski reports or a mistake in grammar. You can do some research before you buy your next house or car. You can troubleshoot a problem with a septic system . You can look for a job or your ideal mate

The old Farmers Almanac offers tide tables, planting charts, and weather predictions.

But the Web is for entertainment, also...
movies, books (yes, even banned books), music, paintings, and puzzles. You can walk the Appalachian Trail, hunt the snark, explore a cave, or get your kicks on Route 66

Just for fun or for outrage, Harper's Index lets the numbers speak for themselves with some interesting juxtapositions, and the AFL-CIO's Executive PayWatch keeps tabs on some individual who some might call overpaid underachievers.

If you'd like to know who was born or what was going down in history, there's plenty of fun calendar pages.

The Web has redefined the word Museum.
Visit a medieval castle or a skyscraper. Explore a battle site. You can follow the steps of your grandparents at Ellis Island. Virtual museums will take you to Egypt, Stonehenge, or the Psychedelic 60's.

The Web is called "World-Wide" for for a reason...
The Web can get you around town or plan a trip, or travel around the world. If you are an armchair globetrotter with higher ambitions there's the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. If you are looking for reasons not to plan a trip, you can check out warnings from the Center for Disease Control.

Hey globetrotters...
Links allow you to travel the Web to distant lands all over the world, and a few places even beyond...  you can even walk through time.

The Web can help you be a good citizen.
If Ken Starr is responsible for nothing else, he has made citizens more aware that government documents are freely available on the Web. Without leaving the Web, you can write your representatives in Congress or contact the Australian Commonwealth government - or donate money to a good cause no matter what country you live in.

Children have not been left out...
There are many Web sites either for or by children.

Do you enjoy cooking?

Even if you are not a chef or a gourmet or epicurean cook, if you are inquisitive about collecting different recipes, the Web can be wonderful. From finding substitute ingredient to meal planning, the Web has many food resources available. Some would say it is a recipe collector's paradise and a cook's second home, even if some Web sites have even stranger recipes than Susan Stamberg's mother-in-law's cranberry relish.

Fat-free? Or Heavy on desserts - ice cream; cookies; gingerbread and pies to name a few.

Tell the world about yourself...
The Web has become a hobby for hundreds of thousands of folks who have designed their own personal homepages. If you would like to show the world just how busy, graceful, or poetic you are, it is not hard to put together a personal Web page.

The Web is full of words...

ANAGRAMS and PALINDROMES
Brendan's Amazing Anagram Generator takes an English name, word, or phrase, and rearranges the letters to form other English words.

CLICHÉS
The Book of Clichés: Phrases to Say in Times of Trouble.  Cliché Finder is a search engine of over 3,300 clichés. Oh, joy!

CONTESTS, GAMES and TRIVIA
The Amazing Run-On Sentence Page -- you can add to it.
The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels.
~  Jeff Miller's Collection of Word Oddities and Trivia; (Did you know that none of the English words for numbers have an a in them until you reach 1000.)
Brain Candy includes Insults Riddles Jokes Humor Wordplay Mindgames
PhoneSpell lets you translate your phone number into words.
Rosie's Word Puzzles include dozens of puzzles of several varieties, including hidden words, similies, and ringers.

PUNS
~  Michael Curl's Tom Swifties collection includes some oldies.
A pun a day must have been around a while because there are hundreds of them at this site.

TWO INDIVIDUALS WITH A UNIQUE WAY WITH WORDS
~  The one-liners of StevenWright have probably been circulated over the Internet more than any other list of jokes.
~  Who is Harry Shearer and why is he saying all those strange things? (It requires Real Audio to find out.)

Frankly...
Everyone knows that you can access erotica and sexually explicit material on the Web. If you are concerned about this, web guidance systems, such as Cyberpatrol, or Netnanny, are available. These systems are not perfect by any means and will block out some very educational and informative pages... (probably even this one) The best way you can protect your children is to talk to them, educate them, and teach your moral and ethical standards BY EXAMPLE. There is no program that can do that for you.

Soooo, what can you do on the Web?
This page only begins to answer the question, but here's a quick A - Z to think about...

And lastly, a few parting thoughts...
Some of the problems you experience on the web may not be linked to anything being wrong with the Web - Instead it might have more to do with your expectations.

~ The Internet does not have all the answers.

~ Everything on the Internet is not free and accessible.

~ Do not believe everything you see on the Internet is accurate, reliable, or up-to-date. You must learn to Think and Reason things through... logically. Almost anyone can put up almost anything on the Web for almost any purpose.  Examine assumptions, including and perhaps especially, your own.

~ You can locate pictures of naked children on the web. You can also find sites that tell how to make bombs. There are pages that show you how to break the law. There are even sites that try to lure your children in to music-disdaining fundamentalist churches. But you have to try to find them...

~ The Web is a fairly accurate reflection of the world we live in. If you go looking for nasty, evil, slimy things you will find them. If you look for nice, friendly, positive, productive things, you will find them. If you are finding too much of what you say you are not looking for... perhaps it time for some deep introspection and self honesty.

And if all this wasn't enough to get you started, take a look at someone else's ideas on what you can do on the World Wide Web.
